Does replacing the dryer vent hose actually fix slow drying?

Often, yes. The hose is the weak link. Foil accordion flex crushes easily. Behind pedestal washer/dryer sets in shallow laundry closets, the dryer gets pushed back and the hose folds flat. Airflow dies at that fold. You can check this yourself. Pull the dryer out and look at the shape of the duct.

Hose choice matters more than brand. Semi-rigid aluminum holds its round shape under compression. Plastic and thin foil do not, and foil tears at the ribs. The transition hose stays exposed and reachable, never buried in a wall or ceiling. Connections get clamped. Screws that point into the airstream catch lint and build a plug.

The hose is also where problems upstream show up. If the attic-to-roof-jack vertical is matted with lint and fine desert dust pulled back during haboobs, a new hose buys you little. Same with foil duct collapsed where it crosses a truss chord. We look at the whole run before swapping parts.

Signs worth acting on: two and three cycles to dry one load. A burning smell. The dryer shutting down on thermal limit. On a gas dryer, a blocked run adds a backdraft concern, so that one is not worth postponing.
